The NAACP – Houston Branch supports Gulf Coast Regional Blood
Center and the African-Americans Commit for Life program through awareness
and action. To bring this issue to the forefront of the community it
serves, the group hosted its first blood drive in July 2007, encouraging
members and residents of the neighboring community to help save lives.
“People are willing to give when they understand how it affects them,” says Sharonda Wright, director of Health Advocacy Programs for the NAACP – Houston Branch. “I urge people to think about their own families and how they would feel if their loved one needed blood.”
The organization, which consists of more than 1,200 members, is proud to step up to the plate as an African-Americans Commit for Life partner.

Supporting the African-Americans Commit for Life program is a part of
staying true to the National Black MBA Association’s own mission,
says Houston Chapter President Paul Charles.
“We aim to increase economic and intellectual wealth in the African-American community, and we consider health to be a big part of this,” says Charles, who is a longtime blood donor.
The National Black MBA Association’s Houston Chapter, which boasts more than 500 members, is committed to spreading word of the need by delivering the message personally, by word of mouth. “Through awareness and hosting blood drives, we see our partnership as an opportunity to fulfill a great need,” Charles says.
