Donating Platelets

Platelets are a component of your blood that help control bleeding. Platelets are often used to help patients with cancer, among others.

An automated platelet donation is equal to platelets derived from six whole blood donations, so the benefit is that the patient is exposed to fewer donors. But since platelets only have a shelf life of five days, donors are needed continuously.

If you donate platelets (your red cells and most of your plasma are returned to you), you may donate every seven days, with a maximum of 24 times per year. Please note there is a three-day deferral period after taking aspirin to donate platelets.

Lavonne's Story

Lavonne has a lifetime of happy memories with her mother – many of which would not have been possible without blood donors. Diagnosed with leukemia in 2004, Lavonne's mother received platelets almost daily during her hospital stay. "These platelets gave our family the opportunity to treasure those 'one last time' moments before she passed away," Lavonne says.
