The Hospital Services side of Product Management has two primary objectives: maximizing blood component availability while minimizing waste.
It is extremely important for The Blood Center to ensure that every blood component derived from our volunteer blood donations is made available to patients in the Gulf Coast region. Hospital Services drivers drive well over 1,000,000 miles annually, delivering blood components seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
Between our Headquarters operations and our two affiliates in Brazos Valley and East Texas, we service more than 170 hospitals and crossmatch facilities in the 26-county Texas Gulf Coast region. At Headquarters alone, we routinely fill 280 to 300 orders a day from our hospitals and another 35 to 75 orders for our Consultation and Reference department. We achieve this with 61 staff members and 26 vehicles.
Staff process more than 300 phone and online hospital orders daily. Approximately 35 to 40 percent of all orders received are time sensitive.
To minimize waste, Hospital Services has an aggressive program that allows the Blood Center to have one of the lowest percentages of product expirations of all major blood centers in the nation. Our red cell expiration percentage is well below 1 percent annually. Our pheresis expiration percentage continues to decrease in spite of the fact these products only have a five-day shelf life. Frozen product expiration is virtually zero.
