Gold-level blood drive groups – those that host at least four drives per year – were honored at Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center’s annual “A Celebration of Life” Luncheon and Awards Ceremony on Feb. 12, 2015 at the Royal Sonesta Houston Galleria.
Tom Abrahams, award-winning reporter and weekend evening news anchor for ABC-13 KTRK-TV, served as master of ceremonies. Andy and Lori Hollingsworth of Wharton, Texas, shared their inspirational story as a family that has been on both the giving and receiving sides of the donation process.
The event recognized local groups for their commitment to The Blood Center’s lifesaving mission. The Blood Center depends on groups, including small businesses, large corporations, schools, churches and community organizations, to host blood drives throughout the community, providing their employees, students and members with a convenient location to donate.
“The 720 groups that achieved gold-level status by hosting at least one drive per quarter in 2014 played an instrumental role in our ability to serve local patients,” Brian Gannon, president and CEO of The Blood Center, said. “The fact that we can count on you to bring donors regularly throughout the year is what keeps our organization running.”
Several outstanding groups were also recognized in 10 different categories; the full list of winners is below. Marion Sohl of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church received the Bill T. Teague Award for Chairperson of Year. Mr. Sohl, along with his wife Jean, has organized community blood drives at their church in Cleveland since 1999. Mr. Sohl is also one of the most dedicated donors in the history of The Blood Center, having given 1,353 donations so far – the equivalent of 169 gallons!
Congratulations to all of the award winners and thank you to all of the blood groups who dedicate their time and effort to saving lives every year!
