When the Commit for Life program was updated in October 2015, its focus shifted to encourage not just ongoing donations, but “optimum” donations – the blood components most needed from each donor, based on blood type, eligibility and patient needs. At least one optimum donation a year is required for CFL membership.
We recently communicated to donors who have not made an optimum donation in the first program year, letting them know their memberships may soon be expiring. Based on feedback we received, The Blood Center has made the decision to extend the first program year, which would have ended Dec. 31, to March 31, 2017. The extended date allows donors to better familiarize themselves with the Commit for Life program and the importance of giving an optimum donation.
Since patient needs can change daily, optimum donations help to ensure that the components needed most from all blood types are always available. When a donor comes in to donate, Blood Center staff will inform them of their optimum donation.
There are two levels to the CFL program: CFL Select and CFL Elite. CFL Select members must make at least one optimum donation a year, and CFL Elite members must make at least three optimum donations a year. Elite members can retain their level with just two optimum donations if at least one of them is a double red cells donation, since the waiting period to become eligible again is longer.
The number of optimum donations made between Oct. 6, 2015, and March 31, 2017, will determine membership status of a donor through Dec. 31, 2017. If an optimum donation is made in 2017, membership will carry over into 2018.
If membership is lost, donors will not lose the points they have gained thus far, but will not accrue any more points for any non-optimum donations. Membership can be restored by making an optimum donation at any point in 2017.
We greatly value our dedicated donors and are appreciative of the feedback we have received. We hope that this adjustment will make it easier for more individuals to enjoy the benefits of being Commit for Life donors. Learn more about the CFL program, or contact email@example.com for questions.
