Homemade Ice Cream for Holiday Donors!

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

Here in Houston, it’s not too cold for some homemade ice cream! We’re partnering with the ladies of Sweet Things Ice Cream Shoppe in Katy for their very first blood drive, this Friday, Dec. 23, from 12 to 6 p.m. All donors will receive a free ice cream cone, up to two flavors!

At Sweet Things, all of the ice cream, and yes, even the ice cream cones, are homemade – yum! Sweet Things is owned and operated by a Katy mom and her three daughters.

“We thought hosting a blood drive was a great way to give back to the community,” said Manager Jennifer Rico. “Donating blood is such a quick and easy way to give back.”

This family-owned business is located by Katy Mills Mall, so stop by during your last-minute shopping to help save lives and earn a sweet treat!

Santa will also be on site from 12 to 2 p.m. to take photos with donors! We hope to see you there!

Beat the Heat! Important Safety Tips for Blood Donors

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

We wouldn’t be exaggerating to say that summer blood donors are developing a new appreciation for the air-conditioned comfort of our Neighborhood Donor Centers and donor coaches. With temperatures topping 100 degrees this week, the heat can be hazardous if protective measures aren’t taken – and Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center is encouraging donors to stay safe by following these tips.

Take a seat and enjoy some juice and cookies before heading back out into the heat.

Stay awhile. We always encourage donors to relax for a few minutes after their donation before leaving the donor center or drive, but this is especially important when it’s hot outside. Have some refreshments, take a seat and feel free to linger for as long as it takes you to feel good as new.

Quench your thirst. Every blood drive and Neighborhood Donor Center has a well-stocked supply of water and juice for donors to enjoy after they’ve given. Be sure to grab a drink before heading out, even if you don’t feel thirsty. It is important to stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic fluids. You might even take a bottle of water for the road and be sure to drink it within 30 to 45 minutes.

Cool off. After you leave the donor center or blood drive, your vehicle will probably feel like a sauna. Before you drive away, roll down the windows or let the air conditioning run for a moment to help prevent lightheadedness as you’re driving.

Take it easy. We typically ask donors not to engage in strenuous activities following their donation, and we hope you will take this advice to heart when the heat poses an additional danger. If you have to spend time outdoors after donating, it’s a good idea to take it easy. And while we always tell donors to avoid alcohol consumption for 24 hours after donating blood, we think it’s worth an additional reminder at times like this.

Enjoy some ice cream! In case you hadn’t heard, August is Blue Bell Month at Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center. If you donate or attempt to donate any time this month, you’ll receive a gift certificate for a free pint of Blue Bell ice cream. Gift certificates can be redeemed wherever you buy groceries – so beat the heat by grabbing a pint of your favorite flavor.

Blue Bell Makes Saving Lives Even Sweeter

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

bluebellFor many Commit for Life blood donors, August is one of their favorite months of the year to donate. For years now, individuals have timed their donations so that they’re able to give during the month of August, and groups have scheduled their blood drives far in advance to obtain a prime August date.

Why all the fuss over this hot Texas month?

Because for more than 15 years, Blue Bell Creameries has made saving lives during the month of August even sweeter – and a little bit cooler. All who donate or attempt to donate blood during the month of August receive a coupon for a free pint of Blue Bell ice cream, redeemable at the retailer of your choice.

In 2004, Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center and Blue Bell Creameries teamed up to solidify what was previously an every-other-year partnership, and began offering Blue Bell month every August at The Blood Center. As the story goes, Blue Bell President and CEO Paul W. Kruse and The Blood Center’s former President and CEO Bill T. Teague developed a friendship while holed up in a hunting blind together during deer season.

“We like to give back to the communities in which we do business. At Blue Bell we feel that one of the very best ways we can give back is by supporting blood donations because it is such an important and critical service,” said Blue Bell spokesperson Kris Lewis. “Also, it just seems that a pint of Blue Bell is a good reward for giving a pint of blood for the benefit of the community.”

In fact, Blue Bell is so committed to supporting blood donations in the Lone Star State that they now host promotions with blood centers based in other major Texas cities as well.

“Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center is proud to say that we have had the longest relationship with this community supporter and we look forward to many years of continuing to save lives together,” Media and Events Manager Mary Richards said.

Since The Blood Center began offering Blue Bell coupons every August in 2004, collections for the month have risen nearly 40 percent. This year, our collection goal for August is 27,800 units – with your help, and the help of “The Little Creamery in Brenham,” we can make it!
