COLLEGE STUDENT AND KINDERGARTNER BONDED BY LIFE-SAVING MARROW DONATION
Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center Arranges Emotional Meeting of Marrow Donor and Recipient

Kindergartner Garrett Johnson may be too young to understand the full magnitude of a life-saving bone marrow donation, but he knew that the man he and his family had come to Houston to meet was someone very special.

Johnson was greeted with a big hug from Justin Lovell, the bone marrow donor who saved his life, at a reception arranged by Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center’s Marrow Donor Program on Nov. 6. The donor and recipient had never met and knew very little about each other, except that it was because of Lovell’s gift that Johnson, a resident of Leander, Texas, had regained his health.

NEW MOBILE OPERATIONS COMPLEX WILL REPLACE WAREHOUSE DESTROYED IN 2005 FIRE
Building Also Will Serve as Site for All Mobile Blood Drive Staging

Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center today celebrates the ground-breaking for a new building that will, among other functions, replace the warehouse destroyed by fire in 2005. The new Mobile Operations Complex will accommodate Central Supply and other staff to allow sufficient room for the organization’s projected growth over the next several years.

Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center Asks Community to Continue Life-Saving Donations

Amid the frenzy of holiday happenings, Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center encourages individuals to take less than an hour of their time to give a life-saving gift.

Donations tend to decrease this time of year, due to donors going out of town or becoming busy with holiday activities. However, area patients require more than 800 blood donations every day, a need that continues year-round. In order for an adequate blood supply to be available this holiday season, more donors are needed to Commit for Life.

The rivalry between Sam Houston State University and Stephen F. Austin State University will heat up the football field Oct. 27, but both schools’ competitive spirit also extends to their efforts to help save lives. Each campus will host a blood drive prior to the big game, and the school that collects the most donations will be declared winner of the life-saving challenge during halftime at the game, to be held Oct. 27 in Nacogdoches. HOUSTONIAN GETS CHANCE OF A LIFETIME TO MEET MAN WHOSE LIFE HE SAVED

Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center’s Marrow Donor Program Arranges Meeting

Rusty Lannin, of Houston, has long been committed to helping people – he’s been saving lives as a blood donor for years. So when he received a call from the National Marrow Donor Program letting him know that he was a match for a patient who needed a bone marrow transplant, Lannin stepped up to save the life of a complete stranger.

Almost three years after that original call, Lannin and the man he saved are no longer strangers. In an emotional meeting arranged by Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center’s Marrow Donor Program, Lannin met David Collinson face-to-face for the first time on Feb. 8, 2007.

Donations Needed Now to Replenish Blood Supply After Storms Hit Houston

Due to canceled blood drives and a decrease in donations due to the winter storm, Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center and all Houston-area hospital blood collectors – MD Anderson Cancer Center, The Methodist Hospital System, St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital and University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) – are encouraging individuals to Commit for Life and donate blood.  The supply is currently down, as fewer individuals tend to donate when bad weather occurs. If more individuals Commit for Life and donate, patients can be served and more lives can be saved.  Every donation can help save up to three lives, and it’s the blood on the shelves that save lives today.
