Douglas W. McClain joined Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center in 1996 as director of information services. He received his BA in business administration from Lake Erie College, and came to The Blood Center after 13 years of increasing responsibility with the American Red Cross Blood Services in Cleveland, Ohio. He brought with him a broad history of experience in project management, software development, regulatory compliance, strategic planning and staff development. Mr. McClain is credited with having brought The Blood Center to the forefront of information technology. Developing and implementing an intra and internet capability and developing a comprehensive website were important advances. However, installing a blood bank software system was most critical to the day-to-day operations of The Blood Center and the overall safety of the blood supply.
In 1999, Mr. McClain was appointed chief information officer and in late 2000 assumed responsibility for the departments of donor recruitment, marketing and public relations, product management and donor collections in addition to information services. Mr. McClain also oversees operations of The Blood Center - East Texas and The Blood Center of Brazos Valley.
