Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center's The Power of Life annual scholarship program will award $2,000 scholarships to exceptional students who are attending high schools located in The Blood Center's service area that actively conduct blood drives.

The Blood Center will award:

  • Eight $2000 scholarships to students in the greater Houston area
  • Three $2000 scholarships to students in the East Texas area

What is required:

  • The high school must host at least two blood drives with Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center during the school year when the scholarship recipients are chosen.
  • The scholarships will be available to any student regardless of whether he or she donates blood.
  • The student must submit a typed, single-spaced essay of up to 500 words that offers ideas on how to motivate others to donate blood, ways to contribute when not an eligible donor or how to keep high school donors as active donors after graduation.
  • The student must plan to attend an institution of higher learning in the year following award of the scholarship.

How To Apply:

  1. Complete an application (available through the high school counselor) or download it here.
  2. Applicants with a minimum GPA of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) will be considered. Include with the application your official high school transcript sealed by school counselor.
  3. Submit an essay that answers one of the following questions:
    • How can you motivate an individual or group of individuals to Commit for Life and become regular blood donors?
    • What can you do to contribute to our life-saving mission of ensuring an adequate blood supply if you are not eligible to donate?
    • What are some of the ways to keep high school donors as active donors after graduation?
  4. The essay should be typed, single-spaced, and up to 500 words (may also include charts and graphs to support rationale). Name must be printed in blue or black ink on the back upper right-hand corner of the essay.
