Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center hosted its 21st Annual National Day of Prayer Breakfast on Thursday, May 3, 2012.

Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center observed National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 3, with the 21st Annual National Day of Prayer Breakfast, held at Houston Museum of Natural Science’s Cockrell Butterfly Center. The breakfast was an occasion to recognize the many faith-based groups that Commit for Life and hold drives with The Blood Center. In 2011, more than 450 faith-based groups hosted blood drives, collecting more than 34,000 units total.

The breakfast celebrated two qualities these groups share: a strong foundation of faith and the spirit of saving lives through blood donation. The uplifting program included a heartfelt testimonial from blood recipient Wanda Alexander, presentation of colors by Jefferson Davis High School Junior ROTC, music from the Hightower High School Choir and a butterfly release. Prayers for different groups in need were offered by the following prayer leaders:

- Dr. D.Z. Cofield, Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church

- Rabbi Gideon Estes, Congregation Or Ami

- Gabriel Rivera, Jefferson Davis High School

- Monsignor William Young, St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church

- Chaplain J.C. “Skip” Straus, Emergency Ministries

- Marlana Mitchell, City of Houston (Retired)

- Karen Paskos, Feed the Homeless
