More African American Blood Donors Needed

With African Americans accounting for only about 10 percent of The Blood Center's donor base, the need for more African American blood donors is great. Individuals like Charles, who has Sickle Cell Anemia, rely on frequent blood transfusions to lead full, active lives - and often the blood they need must come from donors of the same ethnic background.

Now 17, charles has received blood transfusions throughout his whole life. In 2007 his need reached an all-time high when he became very ill and suffered massive bleeding. Fortunately, the blood products Charles needed were available. Thank God that people cared enough to donoate, his aunt, Kerry, says.

Your Blood Type Matters

Every blood donor has a way to help save lives that is special for their blood type. As different components - platelets, plasma and red blood cells - are highly needed from certain blood types, The Blood Center uses automated collection technology to maximize the benefit of your donation.

If you've been asked to consider making an automated donation, it's because there is a high need among local patients for specific components from your blood type - whether that is A, B, O or AB. Automated donations are also more beneficial for the patients who receive them, and you receive the benefit of more Commit for Life points!
