Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center honored more than 2,000 gold-level Commit for Life members during its “A Gathering of Heroes” event, held March 4 at Minute Maid Park. This elite group of donors has helped save countless lives by Committing for Life and donating at least once a quarter in 2006.

Emcee Roseann Rogers, of KPRC Local 2, highlighted the importance of blood donors to her family, as her now-2-year-old son underwent open-heart surgery as a newborn and benefited from volunteer blood donations. Another blood recipient, Tanye Cole, spoke about how blood donors saved her life when she needed blood following the birth of her oldest son, who is now in college.

Brian Gannon, Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center’s president and CEO, recognized a special subgroup, the 10-plus-gallon donors, but noted that every blood donation is valuable, since each donation saves as many as three lives. He also recognized a group of future Commit for Life members, who have already begun helping save lives by spreading the word about the need. Four high school seniors received $2,000 scholarships based on essays they wrote to encourage blood donations among their peers.

“Individuals who Commit for Life are essential to meeting the needs of patients in our region,” said Brian Gannon, president and CEO of Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center. “By continuing their commitment to donate at least once a quarter, they are saving the lives of countless individuals. These donors deserve the highest recognition for everything they do to help.”
