The new Gulfgate Neighborhood Donor center offers East Houston residents convenience and comfort as they make a commitment to saving lives.

The Gulfgate Neighborhood Donor Center opened its doors on March 25 and celebrated its official grand opening on Wednesday, April 29, making it the 15th location for The Blood Center. This 2,500-square-foot, state-of-of-the-art facility is located in the high-traffic Gulfgate Shopping Center behind Chuck E. Cheese.

The Blood Center chose to open in the predominantly Hispanic Gulfgate neighborhood as part of its initiative to recruit more Hispanic blood donors. A large number of Hispanics have type-O blood, so there is a great opportunity for this community to help a broad cross-section of patients. However, less than 16 percent of The Blood Center’s donors are Hispanic.

"Gulfgate will play a pivotal role in diversifying the current donor base in the Texas Gulf Coast region," says Brian G. Gannon, president and CEO. "Now that we have a presence in Gulfgate, we hope more individuals from this community will see how easy it is to help save lives."

Joined by local business leaders, East End Chamber of Commerce members and Houston City Council Member James Rodriguez, Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center celebrated its move into East Houston. Harris County Commissioner Sylvia Garcia issued a proclamation declaring April 29, 2008, Commit for Life Day in Harris County’s Precinct 2.

The Gulfgate Neighborhood Donor Center is led by manager Jonathan Risley and is open Tuesday through Saturday. For hours of operation or to schedule your donation at the Gulfgate Neighborhood Donor Center, visit www.giveblood.org or call the center at (713) 641-4900.
