Livingston Area Residents Commit for Life
![]() |
Since the rollout of the Commit for Life program in November 2003, Livingston-area residents have stepped up to help save lives. To reach the gold level, Commit for Life groups are asked to host four blood drives a year, allow The Blood Center to contact them and spread the word. Several area businesses, schools and churches have taken this pledge to heart, hosting regular blood drives and producing amazing results.
Memorial Medical Center hosts community blood drives every eight weeks, resulting in consistently high turnouts of no less than 100 donors at each blood drive. For its 2005 achievements, the Livingston hospital took home “Celebration of Life” hospital division awards for having the greatest number of donations and highest percentage population. A new chairperson, Peggy Stapleton, accepted leadership duties in August 2006 and is excited to make 2006 and 2007 equally successful.
The Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas is another Commit for Life group dedicated to helping save lives. As a new gold-level group for 2006, the tribe has hosted blood drives four times this year. Along with blood drive chairperson Paula Robinson, Chief William Sylestine helps to promote the importance of being a life-saving partner throughout the tribe.
Sam Houston Electric Co-op, a long-standing partner in saving lives, became a gold-level Commit for Life group in 2005. Dana Massey, blood drive chairperson, makes it her mission to spread the word and educate her co-workers about the need for blood. She has proven her success not only in 2006, but has already scheduled all of her blood drives for 2007. Dana knows the importance of donating blood on an ongoing, since it’s the blood on the shelf that helps save lives.
The Blood Center East Texas is asking its donors to follow the lead set by these Livingston-area Commit for Life groups to help maintain a strong blood supply. The Blood Center East Texas is the primary supplier of blood components to eight hospitals in a six-county East Texas area. For more information or to schedule a blood drive, call 1(888) 433-1733.
