Couple Makes Saving Lives a Team Effort

While some couples opt for dinner and a movie on their dates, Larry Earles and his wife, Jessie, enjoy saving lives together. “It’s our special every-other-month date,” he said of their regular appointments with Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center. “We always pick a day to have lunch together and donate blood.”

Now, the couple is enjoying another benefit of giving blood. Earles is the winner in Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center’s IW Marks giveaway, making him the proud owner of a his-and-hers set of Tank watches, generously donated by IW Marks Jewelers. He was one of more than 73,000 individuals who donated or attempted to donate between April 1 and June 30, 2005.

Earles’ wife persuaded him to give blood for the first time 15 years ago when the two lived in College Station. Earles said although many people decide to donate when a loved one needs blood, he is just happy to know he is helping someone. “I believe it’s the right thing to do,” he said. Earles lives in Bear Creek and gives blood at Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center’s Memorial City Neighborhood Donor Center.
