Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center's mission is to partner with the community to help save and sustain lives by providing a safe supply of blood, blood components and related services.
Real World East Texas ( logo will need to be revised to remove 'Houston') More than 60 high school blood drive volunteers representing seven schools from across the East Texas region gathered recently for The Blood Center East Texas' first Real World educational workshop. The event, held on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, was designed to teach teens how to help save lives by conducting successful high school blood drives.
The event included a Power of Life break-out session, in which students from different schools teamed up to brainstorm ideas that could benefit their school blood drives; a presentation by Dr. Beth Hartwell, medical director of Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center in Houston; and a testimonial by Monica Smith, who is a double amputee as a result of an auto accident two weeks before her high school graduation.
The students were also able to see firsthand how their blood donations help save lives. Monica credits blood donations for helping to save her life and said a personal thank-you to all the school representatives for hosting blood drives and to those who personally donate blood.

If every individual who donated once in 2006 donated twice this year, we would have an ample blood supply to meet hospitals' needs?
