Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center is proud to share the stories of real-life blood recipients as we encourage the community to Commit for Life. Our new awareness ad features a young man whose dreams can come true thanks to blood donors.
Now 15, Trey is much like any other healthy, happy teenager. But he recognizes that this would not be the case without blood donors.
At just 5 weeks old, he was diagnosed with cancer - a diagnosis that led to nine months of treatment, in which blood transfusions played a major role. At the time, his mother, Shelley, was awed by the kindness of strangers who donated.
"When my baby needed blood, I begged the doctors to take all of mine. However, it does not work that way. He needed more than I could give, and strangers saved my son. I will spend my whole life trying to say thank you," Shelley says.
Fortunately Trey beat cancer at a young age and is now in high school, looking forward to milestones like driving, college and a lifetime of possibilities. He hopes that his story will inspire more people to Commit for Life so that other patients will have the same opportunities he has.
