Penny, a local teacher with some free time over the summer, has helped us kick off our new Volunteer Driver program. We’re pretty excited about the program because not only does it help our nonprofit save money on courier fees, but it’s also another chance for our volunteers to help us save lives.
Just one month in, Penny said she’s enjoying it. She even became a blood donor the same day she came in for training.
“So many people in the building have been supportive and made me feel welcome.”
Our volunteer drivers get an insider look at how The Blood Center operates because they help retrieve and deliver blood samples from area facilities back to our headquarters for testing. They must commit to 2-4 driving shifts a month for at least four hours, clock in at headquarters and are issued a company vehicle each shift.
Because this volunteer slot is so critical to what we do, there is some extra training involved. We want to keep our volunteers and our products safe, so our drivers must pass a background check and drug screening and complete a road test as well as a defensive driving course paid for by The Blood Center.
“In my opinion, GCRBC invested in me as a volunteer,” Penny said. “Not only did I have the DOT driving test as the first volunteer driver, I also got a physical, hepatitis shot and took an online defensive driving course.”
