It’s the most wonderful time of the year … to donate platelets! We have an urgent need for blood and platelet donations during the holidays, and blood donation is a great way for blood donors to spread Christmas cheer.
Why do we talk about platelets so much? They make up less than one percent of our blood and have a shelf-life of only five days. We encourage many of our donors to give platelets through an automated system. The equipment draws blood, separates the platelets, and returns the other components to the donor, along with a saline solution. As a result, you can donate platelets as frequently as every two weeks!
Does donating platelets take longer? Yes. Is it worth it? YES.
I donate platelets myself and (don’t tell our phlebotomists I said this) love getting pampered every time I come into the center! Juice? Cookies? A blanket? Yes, to all please. Also, can I get the remote for this TV?
In the spirit of the season, I’m giving you my top 5 movies to watch while you’re donating platelets this Christmas.
The Holiday—It’s a sweet Christmas movie that will give you all the feels.
Home Alone—Time flies when you’re watching Kevin fight off two bumbling burglars.
Elf—“Son of a Nutcracker!” It’s my favorite.
The Polar Express—It embodies the Christmas spirit and brings the magic of the season to life.
Die Hard—OK, no top five list is complete without some controversy. I believe it’s a Christmas movie.
I’ll be getting in one final donation for 2019. I hope to see you there!
