Do you have any idea of the unbelievable power you have?
I was excited last summer to meet Shelley and her daughter, Courtney. The two were full of laughter and fun when Shelley came into our office for a photo shoot. Shelley is one of our long-time dedicated donors. She’s got that kind of giving spirit, and we were thrilled to capture a few photos of her.
When the mother-daughter duo came into our office, Courtney was happily engaged and preparing for her wedding. In her early 20s, she happily jumped in for a few pictures with her mom at the end of the shoot after encouraging and helping Shelley look her best over the previous hour.
Nearly two decades ago, Shelley clearly remembers a moment of despair when she saw Courtney after having surgery on her skull at 7 months old. Courtney was gray, and her mom didn’t recognize her. It was heartbreaking, but as Courtney received a blood transfusion, she was transformed into a pink, healthy baby. Then, when Shelley was 40, a childhood friend died of cancer.
Shelley had given blood on occasion before, but she is now a committed donor because she wanted to do whatever she could to help others who need it. Shelley donates platelets, in particular, in honor of her friend — cancer patients often need platelets while undergoing treatment.
Together, we are changing lives every day. Babies, children, teens, adults of all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds would not be here today if it weren’t for blood donors.
We are thankful for you making time and donating regularly because you are impacting lives in ways you can’t imagine. It’s beautiful and selfless, and there are people alive today who wouldn’t be with their families if it weren’t for you.
You, my friend, are so incredibly powerful.
