GULF COAST REGION— Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center saw a tremendous response in our community to our call for help, and we are no longer experiencing shortages. As of today, our hearts and shelves are full. We are so thankful for each one of your contributions. The coronavirus has caused major disruptions throughout the world, and we are no exception. With surgeries still on hold and decreased usage, we estimate that our current blood supply will cover the need for the next few weeks.
Our responsibility to our community is to ensure we have enough blood to sustain the lives we support. Just as important, we must not collect more than what we need due to the limited shelf life. In doing so, we have decided to slow down our collections to prevent any over-collecting from our donors.
We are only accepting donations by appointment right now. There are limited appointments available in the next couple of weeks for ongoing platelet needs. Our focus is now on scheduling donor appointments in May and June to ensure we have the blood needed at that time.
The Blood Center continues to take your safety seriously. Our staff members have implemented increased disinfection protocols to prevent the spread of disease at our centers, including:
- Hand hygiene and gloves
- One-time use items
- Enhanced cleaning of all surfaces between every donor
- Wellness checks, stay-at-home if sick messages (and the same messages to our donors)
- Social distancing in every collection site
The Blood Center has in-house doctors and trained medical staff who will continue to refine our processes to ensure the safety of our blood donors. As information updates from our local officials, we plan to update our practices to match. We appreciate your patience during this process.
If you are feeling healthy and well, please continue to check giveblood.org for an available appointment. Blood donations are needed regularly and throughout the “Stay Home, Work Safe” period.
