Spring Break Travel Leads to Seasonal Drop in Blood Donations

Across Greater Houston

HOUSTON, Texas — Gulf Coast Blood encourages the community to donate blood as the region experiences a seasonal dip in donations during spring break. With many schools closed and families traveling, blood donations typically drop, as hospital demand remains steady.

Blood cannot be manufactured and relies entirely on volunteer donors. When people leave town for vacation or step away from their regular routines, donation appointments are often postponed or missed, creating a gap in the local blood supply.

“Spring break is a time when many people are traveling or focused on family activities, and that often means fewer donors in our centers,” said Stephanie Jacksis, Gulf Coast Blood Corporate Communications Manager. “Unfortunately, the need for blood in hospitals doesn’t take a break. Patients undergoing surgery, trauma care, cancer treatment, and chronic illness still rely on our generous donors every day.”

Gulf Coast Blood supplies blood to hospitals across the Gulf Coast Region and must collect about a thousand donations each day to meet our local hospital and medical facility needs. A sustained drop in donations can quickly strain the local blood supply.

Community members who are in town during spring break are encouraged to consider donating. A single blood donation can help save up to three lives. “Even one donation can make a meaningful difference for patients in our community,” Jacksis said. “If you’re home for spring break or have a little extra time, we encourage you to step up and help.”

Appointments are encouraged but walk-ins are welcome. To schedule a donation appointment, visit giveblood.org today!
