Blood Donor Ban Lifted for Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease

Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center is excited to welcome more donors to help save lives! The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) removed a two-decade-long rule that previously deferred donors from donating blood for time spent in Europe due to concerns about transmitting a variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) through blood transfusions.

vCJD donors update

Donors who have traveled or lived in the United Kingdom, France, or Ireland can now donate blood and help save lives! Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center has removed deferrals for anyone who has lived or traveled to Europe following new guidance by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The deferral was related to a theoretical risk of transmitting variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) through blood transfusions.
