Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by Donating Blood

HOUSTON, Texas – Gulf Coast Blood is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by recognizing the Hispanic donors, volunteers, employees and community partners who help support patients throughout the region. 

Hispanic Heritage Month, observed annually from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities. It is also an opportunity to highlight the important role diverse blood donors play in maintaining a strong and reliable blood supply for local patients. 

A patient’s blood type includes more than the familiar A, B, AB and O groups. Red blood cells also carry inherited markers called antigens, and the frequency of some antigens can vary among populations. For patients who need closely matched blood, especially those who receive repeated transfusions, finding a donor with a similar genetic background may increase the likelihood of a compatible match. Building a donor base that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve helps Gulf Coast Blood provide hospitals with the blood products they need, while every eligible donor remains essential to a strong and reliable blood supply. 

Gulf Coast Blood serves more than 170 hospitals and health care facilities across 26 counties, including the Texas Gulf Coast, Brazos Valley and East Texas. Approximately 1,000 blood donations are needed each day to help meet the needs of patients in the communities we serve.
