Gulf Coast Blood Urges Community to Donate Before Independence Day Weekend

Gulf Coast Blood Urges Community to Donate Before Independence Day Weekend

As families prepare to celebrate Independence Day, Gulf Coast Blood is encouraging the community to help save lives by donating blood before and during the holiday weekend.

Holiday weekends traditionally result in fewer blood donations as many people travel and celebrate with family and friends. At the same time, hospitals continue to care for trauma patients, cancer patients, surgical patients and others who rely on lifesaving blood transfusions every day.

Gulf Coast Blood, the exclusive blood provider for more than 170 hospitals and healthcare facilities across the Texas Gulf Coast, must collect approximately 1,000 blood donations each day to meet the needs of patients throughout the region.

"Patients don't get a holiday from needing blood," said Stephanie Jacksis, Corporate Communications Manager at Gulf Coast Blood. "Whether someone is receiving cancer treatment, recovering from surgery or facing a traumatic injury, blood products are needed every day. We encourage everyone who is eligible to donate before the holiday weekend to help ensure local hospitals have the lifesaving blood they need."

Community members who donate blood have several opportunities to make an impact this month.

Through Sunday, July 5, donors can participate in Battle of the Badges, Gulf Coast Blood's annual friendly competition between local law enforcement and fire departments.

Donors can cast their support for Team Police or Team Fire while helping strengthen the blood supply. You can find the most updated numbers on our website: Battle of the Badges.

In addition, donors who give blood by July 31 will receive a $25 eGift Card as a thank-you for helping maintain a strong blood supply during the busy summer months.

Donors also receive a free A1C screening through July 31, providing valuable health information that can help identify elevated blood sugar levels and encourage early intervention to prevent long-term complications associated with diabetes. Every blood donation can help multiple patients and supports a wide range of medical needs, including emergency care, cancer treatments, and routine surgeries.

Donors encouraged to schedule an appointment or find a nearby blood drive by visiting giveblood.org.
